My duty, as her big sister, is to make Mistie feel better. A cure for Mistie’s blues is to look forward to brighter days. I needed to find a way to make her see that brighter days are ahead. So I told Mistie to get on my bike and ride with me.

I looked at Mistie with an earnest stare and said, “Get on, little Sis. You’re coming with me.”

Mistie grabbed the handle bars reluctantly and pulled herself up on the steel frame of the bicycle. As she held on tightly, I began peddling slowly. We then quickly picked up speed, swerving from one side of the sidewalk to the other as the wind blew in our faces.

As we rode over every crack and bump on the sidewalk, we began to laugh. One at a time, the bumps would lift Mistie up from the handle bars. For one second after each bump, Mistie would fly up and be suspended in air, holding on to a moment of happiness.
